Callum Wilson is pushing to return against Burnley on Sunday – after returning to training at Newcastle United.

Wilson, sidelined since February with a hamstring problem, has stepped up his recovery ahead of the relegation-threatened club’s visit to Turf Moor. And Steve Bruce hopes to have the striker – who has scored 10 Premier League goals so far this season – back for the Burnley game.

“He starts training (this week),” said United’s head coach. “Big week. Big week ahead. So let’s see, but muscle injuries, you’ve just see Allan (Saint-Maximin) there. We’ve got to box careful. Good to see him around the training ground, I’ve got to say, but I’ll see how he is.”

Allan Saint-Maximin returned from a groin injury in Saturday’s 2-2 home draw against Tottenham Hotspur.

“It gives everybody a lift,” said Bruce. “The return of Allan, and him training all week, gives everybody a lift. He’ll feel good about his 20 minutes.”
