The video assistant referee (VAR) was once again at the centre of the post-match discussion as Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon was controversially denied a penalty for what appeared to be a mistimed challenge from Manchester United midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.
The Moroccan midfielder caught Gordon’s heel in an attempt to recover from a defensive error and took the England star off balance as Casemiro went on to reclaim the ball. The decision not to award the penalty proved costly as the Magpies fell to a 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford in a huge blow to the club’s Europa League ambitions.
After the game, Gordon said: "I've watched it back and it's a clear penalty. I don't mind the referee getting the decision wrong on the pitch, but I don't understand what the point of VAR is then. It is there to correct mistakes.”
As it stands, Wolves are pushing to get the technology scrapped next season and Gordon’s verdict was: "It's a clear and obvious mistake. I don't know how you can get it wrong. Either get rid of it or get better, it's simple."
