Andy Carroll has been put on standby to face his former club West Ham United.

The Newcastle United striker could be recalled to the starting XI at St James’s Park on Sunday.

Steve Bruce expects to be without Sean Longstaff (hamstring) for the behind-closed-doors Premier League game after the midfielder limped off after scoring in the 4-1 win over Bournemouth in midweek, while captain Jamaal Lascelles (ankle) and Joelinton (calf) are doubtful.

“Changes will be inevitable, I would think,” said head coach Bruce. “I don’t think Sean Longstaff will make it, and we’re waiting on Joelinton. Jamaal Lascelles has a nasty knock to his ankle to, so we’ll see how he is.

Asked about winger Allan Saint-Maximin, Bruce said: “Sports science these days is quite incredible, but, sometimes, your eye tells you whether they’re fresh or not. Hopefully, by tomorrow, he’ll be recovered. Hopefully, he’s fresh.”
