Meet the 'remarkable' 12-year-old who is cheering up his elderly neighbours during coronavirus crisis

Daniel Myers has been dedicating his time to supporting his vulnerable neighbours who are unable to leave their homes during the coronavirus outbreak.

The St Wilfrid’s RC College student initially wrote letters to his neighbours asking them to get in touch if they needed anything from the shop to keep them going.

Now the 12-year-old has been using his one walk a day to gather vital supplies for those nearby who are in need – and he’s also doing all he can to keep a smile on their faces.

Proud mum Chantel Myers said: “He’s always been really caring. He asked if he could see if the neighbours needed anything from the shop and asked if he could write to them.

“Someone offered him money for what he’s doing but rather than keeping it himself he decided to donate it to his scout group, the South Shields 7th Scout Group.

“He says he doesn’t want to profit from something like this – he wants to do it to help people.”

After Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced further restrictions to slow the spread of the virus, Daniel began to use his one walk each day to buy the supplies his neighbours needed before knocking and leaving a shopping bag on their doorstep – keeping in line with social distance regulations.

The kind-hearted youngster has also been drawing pictures for his neighbours, including rainbows, in an attempt to keep a smile on their faces during these unprecedented times.

Daniel is currently supporting nine neighbours, who he’s now all on a first name terms with those who message him with any needs.

He received a letter of thanks from one grateful resident who wrote: “[He’s] such a lovely lad, we all think for someone so young to help in that way is so remarkable, he’s amazing.”

The 39-year-old mum added: “We’re so proud of him. When I saw the letter it just made me cry. I showed him and said this is how much what you’re doing means to people.”
