An emergency search at South Shields has been safely concluded.

Police, fire brigade and coastguard were called to the coast earlier this evening.

A spokeswoman for HM Coastguard said: "We had South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade, the Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and the Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat to search for a person."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "There is nothing to report. We had a police incident but it is all done and dusted.

"Everybody has been stood down.".
