CLOSED: The South Shields flat where hammer put through front door and doorstep threats made to put tenant 'in a wheelchair'

The order on the property, in Newmarket Way, South Shields, was issued after magistrates in South Tyneside were told about numerous incidents involving visitors, making threats and causing damage, including a hammer being put through the front door. And they heard how on one occasion, the tenant was confronted on his doorstep by several people who threatened to ‘put him in a wheelchair’.

Following the issue of the order, the property has been boarded up and the tenant instructed to leave. No one is permitted to enter the flat for three months and anyone who attempts to do faces being prosecuted and jailed. The order was secured following evidence recorded and provided by South Tyneside Council and South Tyneside Homes, in partnership with Northumbria Police.

Cllr Jim Foreman, Lead Member for Housing and Community Safety, said: “The activity in and around this home has made the lives of residents living nearby a misery. People have a right to live their lives free of any such fear and intimidation and this kind of behaviour just won't be tolerated. I hope this order will bring some respite to the local community.

“I’d like to thank the community safety and enforcement team from South Tyneside Homes for their work in securing the order. We will continue to use all tools at our disposal to tackle anti-social behaviour.”

Sergeant Tom Strawbridge of Northumbria Police added: “Securing this order alongside the council was a fantastic outcome for the communities of South Tyneside. Nobody should have to put up with disorder on their own street, and that’s why we have done everything possible in order to shut this address down to visitors.

“We will continue to closely monitor the area, and should anyone breach this order, they will face criminal repercussions and potential time behind bars. I’d like to thank residents for their patience and cooperation throughout, and hope this outcome offers them some comfort.”
